I have a bad history with marathons. I tend to avoid them. They HURT. I haven’t done any races where I thought I was doing well. They turn into death marches where my legs and feet turn into sticks of burning pain. They make me want to cry. Two of the three that I have done have been in ironmans, after 2.4 miles of swimming and 112 miles of biking, so I had an excuse for mere survival. The first stand alone marathon I did was a debacle that took over six and a half hours. I wanted a different outcome.

Ironman is not a race against others; it is a battle between your body and your mind. Whether you want to finish it less than 17 hours or qualify for Kona, it doesn’t matter; through the 140.6 miles you will feel pain, you will want to give up, you will feel great and over the clouds, you might even shed a few tears here and there.

Princess is happy to report that she is finally recovered enough from her injury to run again.  She did 3.22 miles on Sunday at a spectacular 14 min/mile pace.  The squirrels and chipmunks were scampering to keep up.

Just in time to compete in the Pat Griskus Olympic triathlon on June 18.  Princess suspects the run will not be her finest hour.  To make matters worse, last year's 55-59 age group women turned in some amazing times.  Faster than the women in the younger age group. Those are some very scary women.

It has been a little bit since I have blogged on here, so I thought I would talk about my training.  So far I have been training for about 6 months solid and I have been struggling with my motivation level.  I have not gotten faster or feel like things are getting easier.  Sure the other day I did a nearly 8 mile run, but there was nothing impressive about it.  A nearly 9 min/mi pace is nothing to cheer about.  I have been using the same training plan structure since I did my first sprint triathlon in 2009.  I h

On Friday May 6th I held a seminar that discussed pre-race and transition checklists and went through the steps to take.

Beautiful day for a race!  The weather was nice and cool in the morning, but it definitely started to warm up by the start of the race.  Decent breeze slightly out of the north and off the water, so that kept things comfortable for the whole race.  I wanted to go out controlled today, so that meant being above target pace for the first couple of miles.  I hate doing this, because I feel like I am playing catch-up the whole day, but it's definitely the smarter way to run.  My goal time of 1:18:00 meant 5:56's was the target pace.  However, two years ago m

Princess has been locked in a dungeon of her own devising these past eight weeks.  She was hostessing her own personal pity party because of her annoying and unrelenting groin injury, which is healing, ever so slowly.

I have been training now since late October 2010 and have been making some really good progress.  Over the last 6 months, I have been training about 5 days a week.  Supposed to be 6, but I probably get 5 days in for sure.  Each week I have 10 workouts to complete.  Luckily I have been able to stay focused an not get burnt out on my training.  I still manage to spend time with my family and other things that make life good.  But I can see how this can be a really easy thing for people to get burned out on.
